• We deliberately make this product a little bit soft so it can be used as a body balm however you can firm it up quite easily to a firmer lip balm consistency or lipstick consistency

Very Simple To Use: Simply melt over a gentle heat source, add edible colours if desired (oil based) and flavours (oil based - do not use fragrances, they must be flavours) and pour into a pot/tube.

• If using the lip balm tubes, you may need to add a little more wax to firm up a little more (we stock this too) 

If you are making lip Balm to sell, we recommend $4.95 per pot/tube (In a 5gm pot/tube)

(170gm will make approximately 43 pots / 1 kg will make approximately 200 Lip Balms). *Jars are packed by volume rather than weight

Olive Oil Balm Base:  A rich, moisturising base for massage balms and ointments, with organic olive oil and cosmetic grade beeswax or Vegan Waxes. (Paraben-free; Sulfate-Free; Ethoxylate-free; Propylene Glycol-free, Silicone-free, DEA-free and artificial colour-free)

Ingredient List:
Organic Cosmetic Bees Wax (For Standard Base) Carnauba or Candilila Wax (For Vegan Base)
Pure Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Vegetable Oil
 Vit E (Natural preservative)

Aroma: Slight odour characteristic of the carrier oils.

Fragrancing: This product is not normally fragranced other than as supplied.

Colour: Uncoloured - pale yellow clear to hazy base easily coloured with oil soluble colours. (We offer the colours also in other listings). Our unscented lip balm base comes as a natural coloured (slight cream to yellow tone) pot-set base

Colouring: Make a dilute solution of oil soluble food colours in Jojoba oil. Try 1 to 5 drops of dilute colours to 100gm of Balm.

Usage: The balm can be re-heated in a bain marie (water bath) to up to 70C to enable re-packing, customisation and decanting or melted on a stove top or microwave in 10 second bursts. Due to the chemistry of this product the balm will present as harder in winter and slightly softer in summer.  Commercial balms should have a melting point of between 50-55C in order for them to retain their integrity under hot summer conditions but still remain usable in winter (5C minimum).

Finished Product Usage: A rich emollient base that can be used (as is) as a moisturiser (occlusive-type), or as a base for preparing rich emollient creams or lotions.
Apply to clean, dry skin and massage until absorbed.

Features: Oil base with the consistency of a high viscosity cream.

Best By / Use By Dates: Best by Date is 3-6 months from date of purchase, although storage conditions may lengthen or shorten the shelf life of this product. Our balm bases are made fresh each week, ensuring your prolonged best by date. Store in a cool, dark location to prolong shelf life

Customisations:

Take the desired amount of Balm base and add active ingredients, essential oils and/or colour to suit your particular purpose and mix.
Create your own by adding carrier oils for a softer balm or use as it is.

Mica:  After melting down, add up to 10% mica for a lip tint or shine.

Speciality Oils and Butters:  1-5% of additional oils and/or butters can be added to this base when melted.  Doing this (depending on set point of oils/butters) may soften the balm base, however the products melting point should still be within saleable limits.  Adding more oils and butters may create a balm that is not firm enough for tubes.  In this instance more wax may be required to firm up.

Waxes:  Adding more waxes to this base will increase the melting point.  This may be necessary in some cases, especially if in a hot climate

Infused Oils:  Infused oils are another way to increase the herbal content of the balm. You may either ‘cook’ them with the melted balm and strain or add the finished infusion. Generally a ratio of 0.1-1% of your formula unless the herbal description states you can use more.

Essential oils and fragrances:  Any oils may cause lip irritation.  There are some essential oils that are suitable for lip balms (citrus, lavender, mint, Eucalyptus, tea tree, Rose geranium) but others that are less so (herbs and spices typically). Please thoroughly investigate the skin suitability for more specific advice on the safe doses before adding essential oils to your formula.  Fragrances are generally not used in lip balms due to them not being formulated for that purpose. Instead, flavours can be purchased and added. We offer both water based and oil based flavours, for lip balms you will need the oil based variety.

Oil Soluble Actives:  Oil Soluble vitamin C,  Vitamin F blend, Alpha Lipoic Acid (antioxidant) could be considered for an anti-ageing or restorative lip balm.

Improving the balm after-taste:  0.05-0.2% of Stevia Powder can be mixed through the lip balm base to disguise the oily after-taste that ingestion of the balm leaves in the mouth.  Stevia is a naturally derived sugar alternative and while it is water soluble, small amounts can be dispersed through a lip balm base with little trouble. We recommend you grinding this to a very fine powder to avoid unpleasant grittiness in the finished product. Adding sweetener to your lip base will also have a curious effect of requiring less of the flavour oil to bring out the flavour(s).
